Cherrywood
is not like all other woods but it is very long-lasting because of its durability
and density. Its unusual curly grain pattern tends to make many problems not only
in staining but also in finishing. If you have cherry wood dining room
furniture, you need to maintain it carefully. If your wood is damaged or chipped
in some way, you should opt for painting to give it a new look.
To paint
your cherry wood dining room furniture you would need these things:
polyurethane, latex paint, foam brushes (3 and 4 inch), 220 grit sandpaper, electric
hand sander, and tack cloth. You can divide the painting into three stages of
process; preparation, priming and painting, and top coat.
Preparation
·
Prepare a well-ventilated area such
as garages and unfinished basements for this painting project.
·
Clean your furniture surface from dirt
or grime by washing it well.
·
Remove all drawers from dressers or doors
from cabinets along with hinges and knobs by placing them on a separate
worktable.
·
Sand the surface of the existing
finish in the direction of the grain using 220 grit sandpaper and a hand sander
so the paint will adhere well.
Priming and Painting
·
Use a 3- or 4-inch foam brush to apply
one coat of a stain-blocking primer. Let the primer dry completely at least two
or three hours.
·
Use a foam brush to apply your first
coat of latex paint. Let the paint dry for three hours or more.
·
After the first coat of paint is dry
then begin to buff your furniture by using a tack cloth to wipe it down.
·
The next is to apply a second coat
of paint and let it dry three hours or more.
·
If you are using a white or
light-color paint you can add a third coat of paint if needed.
Top Coat
·
Use a foam brush to apply a coat of
polyurethane to your furniture. Let it dry for 24 hours.
·
Once again, apply a coat of
polyurethane and let it dry for 24 hours.
·
Replace all knobs and hinges and. Replace
drawers and hang doors back on cabinets.
Painting
your cherry wood dining room furniture using the method above will add a
new look as well as a new feel to your furniture.
